With enticing illustrations in vibrant color, vintage French travel posters evoke a golden age of travel, when the glamour and adventure of the journey were as memorable as the destination. Advances in transportation simplified travel for the the average person, and railway companies such as Paris-Lyon-Méditerranée commissioned artists to create imagery that would tempt tourists to the Cote d'Azur, Avignon, Lac d'Annecy, and other popular locales. The resulting lithographs depicted lush vistas, ancient monuments, posh hotels, and quiet villages - all advertising to the world an ideal escape to their little part of paradise. The eye-catching posters in this collection come primarily from the 1920's and '30s, throughout which France was a premier European vacation destination. Though often little is known about the artists themselves, their works are now widely admired and collected.
